My time volunteering in Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry

I finished school in the UK last summer, and decided that I wanted to travel around Vietnam. I chose to volunteer so that I could help locals learn English, and also so that I could get to know a city in Vietnam really well instead of merely passing through; I wanted to be more than just a spectator for once.

When I arrived, I was taken to the guest accommodation, and then went to meet the friendly people who were to help me teach, and show me around the city, for the two weeks I was in Thai Nguyen.

I still can’t believe how happy and smiley everyone I’ve met is – I have only come across welcoming, kind people who are always pleased to support me both in the classroom, and also in taking me around town for meals and shopping.

I taught first year students (the yeargroup K49), and was pleasantly surprised by how good both their grammar and vocabulary was – even if they were shy about speaking infront of the class. I must admit that, I too, was a little anxious about having to talk to a class of twenty students the same age as me, but was quickly reassured by the enthusiasm of all the students.

I am now continuing my travels around Vietnam, and have to say goodbye to Thai Nguyen, but I will never forget my time here and the friends I made, as it has been such a heart-warming experience, and I wish I could stay longer! If I ever return to Vietnam, which I hope to do in the near future, I will definitely revisit the University, and will try to keep in touch with my new friends in the meantime.

Thank you to everyone who made my stay here so amazing, and I wish you all the best for the future.
